Support Structures: a reading group (Book Four)
THURS, 7 JUNE at 18:00
Venue – Anatomy Rooms – Project Space
Book Four. Unthinking Eurocentrism: Multiculturalism and the Media, Ella Shohat/Robert Stam. Chapter 5: Stereotype, Realism and the Struggle over Representation.
For this iteration of the reading group we asked Daniel Massie to select a text for us to discuss. Daniel is a practice PhD candidate whose research looks at supporting female film performances, the Academy Awards, and audio-visual criticism.
The text Daniel chose is from ‘Unthinking Eurocentrism: Multiculturalism and the Media’, by Ella Shohat/Robert Stam. The chapter we will look at thinks about representation, stereotype and the things that support these structures. Daniel has referred to it in his research on supporting characters when considering how certain ‘types’ of people can get pushed back into secondary or ‘supporting’ categories.

The Reading Group is supported by Aberdeen Creative Learning Team and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
This event is part of Underpinning – a curated programme of activity produced by the All In Ideas at The Anatomy Rooms running from February – August 2018. The programme will present a series workshops and events that focus on supporting the continued practice of artists. By inviting practicing artists and artist led models to share elements of their process through a public programme we will address shared concerns of practitioners and consider the individual and collective support structures needed to practice well.
